Elizabeth: a Portrait in Parts
The final project from the late, great Roger Michell (Notting Hill, The Duke) is a remarkable documentary about the life of Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. While this is an affectionate look at Her Majesty, the film doesn’t forego some of the more awkward chapters in her life, such as the recent scandal that surrounded Prince Andrew.

Spider-man: Homecoming (2017)
Spider-Man: No Way Home may have been more epic in scale but Homecoming is still a wonderfully entertaining movie that fans of the web-head won’t want to miss. In this one, Spidey goes up against the Vulture with a little help from his friends and Iron Man. It opens with flashback footage (courtesy of Peter Parker’s phone) of the superhero standoff from Captain America: Civil War and doesn’t let up on the action or the comedy from then on. It’s fun stuff with a standout turn from Holland as the eponymous wall-crawler.

Hacks: Season 2
Season 1 of this drama about ageing comedienne Deborah (Jean Smart) and her partnership with comedy writer Ava (Hannah Einbender) was a critical success so fans of the show will be looking forward to this second season. This time, the two women take to the road to workshop Deborah’s new stand-up act and the usual relationship issues ensue. While critics agree the second season is a good one, there are some who say it’s not as sharp as the first. You can make your own mind up when the season drops on Prime on the 10th of June.
Fairfax: Season 2
The adult animated comedy about a quartet of middle schoolers gets a second season so if you enjoyed the first, you will want to tune in to this one. All the usual issues that affect young teens are here, including first crushes and the perpetual battle to fit in, so you might relate to the plight of the young protagonists, even if the challenges they face are played strictly for laughs.
My Fake Boyfriend (2022)
In this romantic comedy, a young man (Keiynan Lonsdale) follows the advice of his unconventional best friend (Dylan Sprouse) and uses social media to create a fake boyfriend to keep his awful ex-lover out of his life. Things backfire when he meets the real love of his life and he has to break up with his fake boyfriend. That’s the synopsis for this movie but at the time of writing, there are no reviews (fake or otherwise) to suggest how good this movie might be.

House of Gucci (2021)
Ridley Scott’s movie divided critics when it came out, with some praising the drama for its campy style and others criticising it for the very same thing. No matter the reviews, this is still worth catching for the cast alone – Jared Leto, Adam Driver, Lady GaGa – and if you have ever wanted to learn more about the sordid and deadly goings-on within the Gucci family, you might want to tune in to Scott’s stylish but overlong soap opera of a movie.
The Summer I Turned Pretty: Season 1
If you ever wanted to recapture the magic of that perfect summer when you finally found true love and conquered your teenage acne problem, this new romantic series might be for you. It might also be for you if you enjoyed To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before as the novel on which this movie is based came from the same author.

The One That Got Away
This reality dating series gives contestants another opportunity to reconnect with people from their past who may (or may not be) their soulmates. If you have ever pined after ‘the one that got away,’ you will be able to identify with the people on this show who are given a second chance at finding love with the people they thought had eluded them forever.
Force of Nature (2020)
Mel Gibson and Emile Hirsch star in this heist thriller/disaster movie hybrid but if you’re looking for a cross between Ocean’s 11 and Twister, you’re going to be disappointed as this movie was critically panned. Still, if it’s raining outside and you can see people being blown away with their umbrellas, it’s probably safer to stay inside and watch this calamitous effort than venture outdoors.
Press Play (2022)
Many of us have been transported back in time when playing a song on our old mixtapes but in terms of a trip down memory lane rather than in a literal sense. In this romantic drama, however, the latter is true for one young woman who is given the chance to save the love of her life when she discovers her mixtape can give her the power to travel back through time. It’s a bonkers plot but if you can buy into the crazy premise, you might enjoy this, especially if you have a soft spot for romantic movies.
