What is The Bastard Son Season 1 about?
The story is not without its clichés and centers on Nathan, a 16 year old bastard who’s thrust in the middle of a war within the European witch community, torn between two sides – the Bloods and the Fairborns. Now, Fairborn witches suspect that Nathan is a dangerous Blood witch, given his biological father Marcus’ lineage. The reason for this fear stems from an old incident known as the Peace Massacre, where Marcus showed up and slaughtered all the fairborns in attendance. When the fairborn leader Soul shows up in town, during our present timeline, his daughter Annalise just so happens to be attending the same school as Nathan, and as one may expect, the two befriend one another. There are some wildcard entries in here when it comes to characters, and that stems from Gabriel and Ceelia, who both guide Nathan in their own ways. To balance things out, we have Jessica and Mercury, two antagonist figures who have their own motivations for wanting to stop Nathan. Tensions between the two sides escalate across the season before eventually culminating in a blood-soaked and crazy finale. We have extensive coverage of The Bastard Son across the site, including a full season review and an ending explained. You can find that HERE!
Has The Bastard Son been renewed for season 2?
At the time of writing, The Bastard Son has not been renewed for a second season and that’s certainly shocked many people. Generally Netflix gauge numerous metrics before renewing a show, including how many people initially watch it and then looking at the drop-off rate. With some shows, cancellations or renewals happen quickly (ala. Squid Game, Bridgerton & Irregulars) Other times, it can take months before Netflix make a decision over a show’s future. Despite The Bastard Son receiving a great reception from audiences and critics alike, it’s not enough to secure a renewal from Netflix. According to this article over at DigitalSpy, Netflix executive Peter Friedlander said: “When we have to make our decisions, it’s about the long term and the longer-term viewing. We always are looking at many variables, too. The Top 10 is just one variable in that.” DigitalSpy went on to say: The abrupt cancellation therefore suggests that viewership just wasn’t on par with some of the streaming platform’s other inaugural seasons this year. Unfortunately, this is the end of the road for Netflix’s newest fantasy series.
What we know about season 2 so far:
Barely anything is known about season 2 at this point, given Netflix have only just announced a cancellation. Unless another studio picks this up though, it seems like this is the end of the road for this fantasy drama. We did initially predict that this would be renewed so the cancellation certainly caught us off-guard! Are you as shocked as we are about The Bastard Son not returning for a second season?
