Episode Guide
Paolo Di Verona Juju Glow Carlao Sensacao Ramona Indra Haretrava Adla Davis A Queen Is Born is a very simple reality series, clearly drawing inspiration from shows like Ru Paul’s Drag Race to produce a distinctly Brazilian flavoured slice of reality pie. There’s nothing particularly different or innovative here but there’s enough to make for an enjoyable watch nonetheless. Each episode begins with an introduction to our candidate; a man in desperate need of a make-over and perfecting their drag act. After a brief history lesson, we’re introduced to our eccentric fairy drag Godmothers, Gloria Groove and Alexia Twister. Their eccentricity and slapstick humour keeps the tone light, as they judge our acts on their catwalk presence, dancing, outfits and more. From a screenwriter confronting difficult moments in their past to a hairdresser needing to hone their lip-syncing skills, there’s just enough variety to these episodes to keep you coming back for more. Alongside the reality segments are the usual “big reveals” at the end, as our act heads out on stage in front of an applauding audience. It’s all very simple stuff but it’s designed to be so – there’s nothing particularly challenging or unique with this beyond the slightly different flavoured acts the duo bring in each episode. It’s especially evident though that the real meat of the series comes in its messaging – ideas around self expression and being confident in one’s own body are especially prevalent. And that’s ultimately the big takeaway here. There’s not quite enough for this to stand out next to more prolific reality contenders, but it’s a decent enough watch nonetheless. A Queen Is Born is very obvious, very familiar and very simple in its structure. The feel-good stories and transformations are enough to keep you hooked though but when you’re done with the 6 episodes, it’s unlikely you’ll remember this one for a long time to come.
